Wellington fire: Community rallies together for family

In the early hours of Tuesday morning on July 30, Fire and Rescue NSW received a call to a house fire in Pierce Street.

Despite firefighters amazing efforts there was nothing that could be done to save the family home.

Fire and Rescue NSW station commander Mark Moroney told the Wellington Times said the fire was rapidly spreading through the rooms of the house and there was nothing that could be done to save the family home.

"It was so fully involved in fire, so on arrival our efforts were concentrated to protecting the adjoining house and extinguishing the fire," Mr Moroney said.

The mother and three of her children were able to escape through the front door and the fourth child was rescued from the front window by a passer-by. Within hours the community were donating financial and household items to the family.

The St Vincent de Paul Society contributed household and clothing items, Marantha House donated beds and Binjang radio broadcast a call out.

Viv Wellington at Wellington Realty - who the family rent from - said her business partner Lisa Anderson was able to help get the family a new home just 12 hours later.

"This community is amazing. It's just a classic example of what happens in this town (when something happens) everyone just pulls out all the stops to help," she said.

A 'Go Fund Me' page was also set up for the family by Wellington's Meg Powyer to financially help them.

The goal is $5000 and so far locals have thrown their support behind the cause.

As of Friday August 2, more than $1360 had been raised. Ms Powyer said the family are so grateful for the community's support.

While so much has already been given since Tuesday morning's fire, the family are in need of items such as drawers and tallboys, plus pantry food items, Ms Powyer said.
