Almost $8 million has been committed to the federal government's torture and trauma survivors' assistance program.

A similar amount will go to Afghan-Australian community organisations which welcome and support new arrivals.

Specialist legal services to help evacuees on temporary humanitarian visas stay in Australia permanently will receive $6.4 million.

Almost $5 million will be spent on helping arrivals learn about skills and education pathways to help them get a job.

Immigration Minister Alex Hawke said a special panel established to help the transition to life in Australia had guided the funding decisions.

"Australia has a proud history of helping those most in need, and there has been an outpouring of community support for this cohort of new arrivals," he said on Thursday.

But the government's decision to offer a further 3000 humanitarian places has come under renewed scrutiny after officials revealed more than 26,000 applications in recent weeks.

It is estimated when families of applicants are taken into account about 100,000 Afghans are seeking asylum under the program.
