Ms Bennison received the award for her invaluable role at the Burrendong Botanic Garden and Arboretum, where she has been for more than 37 years, ensuring its success as a conservation area for native plants and a tourist attraction.

More recently she forged relationships with local landholders to collect and grow seedlings of rare and endangered species for their preservation. Because of her horticultural skills and knowledge, she has been successful in propagating viable plants. Ms Bennison is a highly respected member of both the scientific and horticultural fields.

Four more outstanding Wellington residents have been named in the 2021 Dubbo Regional Council Australia Day awards lineup.

Senior Citizen of the year Rod Althofer was acknowledged for his work within the community. After being named in Citizen of the year in 2008, Mr Althofer still hasn't slowed down taking part in a number of groups.

Young Sportsperson of the year went to 10-year-old Daniel Mezes for his contribution to equestrian sports.

"He is a fine role model in the sport, impressing with his dedication, sportsmanship and passion for animals," his citation read.

Garry Meisch and Corey Sutherland were also both acknowledged with Community Service Awards during the ceremony.

Mr Meisch for his work within both the Wellington, Geurie and Dubbo Communities and Mr Sutherland for his work with Wellington's youth through the Wellington PCYC.
