James Knight, North Albury, armed himself with a bread knife from the kitchen of the home he shared with the victim, then also threatened to kill his uncle.
Moments later, the 24-year-old fled the house in Captain Cook Drive, yelling as he made his way down the street.

When police arrived, Knight was sitting on the nature strip.
"Just shoot me," he said. "That's what I deserve."
After he was arrested and put in the police vehicle, he told officers "kill me" and "I'm worse than Hitler".
Knight told Albury Local Court that he regretted his actions.
"I realise the gravity of my situation," he said.
Knight pleaded guilty to charges of contravention of an apprehended domestic violence order, in relation to his grandmother, and with being armed with the intention of committing an indictable offence.
He suffered from bipolar disorder, anxiety and depression and had also been diagnosed with Asperger syndrome.
Police told the court that Knight and his grandmother were at home on May 14 about 5pm when Knight tried to provide his Netflix account password to other relatives in the house.
Unable to do so, he "flew into a rage" and ran into the kitchen to grab the knife, then began to swear at his relatives.
He told his grandmother "I'm going to kill you" and also threatened to kill her dog and his uncle.
Police took Knight to Albury hospital and had him scheduled under the Mental Health Act, but he was later released when assessed as not being mentally unwell.
He was placed on a community corrections order.
