It is asking Dubbo and district residents to check their bookshelves and cupboards for books they might be willing to donate.

Thursday, January 30, will be the first opportunity this year for the public to drop off donations of books at Meals on Wheels, 74 Mountbatten Drive, between 9am and 5pm.

A working bee last Saturday where 10,000 books were sorted by club members and friends led to the call for more.

Book fair publicity officer Peter Bartley said the club was aiming to offer more than 20,000 books at the fair in Dubbo Showground's Centenary Pavilion on May 2 and 3.

"We keep thinking that the city and the region must have cleaned out their unwanted books since we started asking for donations," he said.

"But they keep on coming much to our amazement and we are very grateful."

Experience of what sells and what doesn't at the book fair has prompted the club to request donations not include "encyclopaedias, Readers Digest of all kinds, magazines, VHS cassette tapes, pre-1960 books with no covers and any books in a damaged condition".

Books can also be dropped off to Meals on Wheels on February 27 and March 19, and at the pavilion on May 1.

"All proceeds raised still go to the Dubbo Support Group of the Royal Flying Doctor Service and cancer research," Mr Bartley said.
