The 'Meet the Mayor' event was held at Cafe 2820 on June 13 and he spoke with multiple people and groups on various issues during the two-hour event.
Some of the issues raised included the beautification of the Wellington CBD and the state of Cameron Park and plans to improve it. The DRC have a masterplan to look into both.
Another issue put forward by locals was concerns about costs at the pool, which will be put to Council later this month.
Cr Shields said he is impressed by people speaking with him about their ideas to improve Wellington, and wanting to know what Council is doing to help make their town better.
"Council has committed to restoring Wellington to its former glory and it's great to see residents want the same thing," he said.

Other concerns raised by residents were the changes to waste stations at surrounding villages.
On Monday the Euchareena Waste Facility closed after asbestos was dumped at site.
There were concerns also raised over the 24-hour policing and queries about maintenance of local roads and what DRC is doing to make Wellington more desirable.
Cr Shields said the opportunity for people to come and talk to him directly is extremely important.
"Sometimes I can give them an answer on the spot, sometimes I have to go back and get a staff member to look into it, and sometimes I may not be able to assist them, at least in the short term," he said.
"But I hope everyone who comes along at least knows I have heard their concerns and will look into them."
Cr Shields said he tries to host a 'Meet the Mayor' event every month but is considering increasing the frequency if there is a need for it.
