The red alert for blue-green algae at the Macquarie River has been lifted.

An alert was put in place earlier in the month after high levels of algae were detected along the river at Wellington, Geurie and Dubbo.

However, the warning has been lifted after two consecutive results below the red alert level.

There are no longer any restrictions on recreational activities in the river and water sources are suitable for stock and domestic use.

A red alert level warning has been issued after blue-green algae was detected in the Macquarie River between Dubbo and Wellington.

Water NSW said people should not undertake recreational activities where they may come into direct contact with the water. the water may also pose a threat to livestock, pets and domestic users that pump directly from the river.

Town water supplies remain unaffected and safe to drink.

People are advised not to enter the water, not to drink untreated water or bathe in untreated water drawn from the river while a red alert level warning is in place.

Blue-green algae usually appear as green paint-like scums on the water, near the edges, or as greenish clumps throughout the water. It makes the water appear dirty, green or discoloured and generally has a strong musty or earthy odour.
