Wellington Public School’s girls cricket team have found themselves as defending champs at the PSSA State Championships after winning the final two years in a row.

The girls team put themselves in the semi-finals after fighting through a difficult win with only ten runs separating them from Newport Public School in late November.
That effort earned them a spot in the final four where they were matched up with Wagga South’s determined side and came away with a win that propelled them through to the finals as defending champions.
The girls faced Tacking Point in the final and successfully defended the championship they won last year against Bolwarra Public School.
Principal Darryl Thompson was left impressed not just with the girl’s wins, but the emphatic fashion with which they got it done.
“We bowled South Wagga out 8 for 86 and we passed them one down; we got 1 for 91, and the final was against a team called Tacking Point, we bowled them out for 63 and again passed them one down, 1 for 67, so pretty comprehensive victories,” Mr Thompson said.
The girls received an unexpected boost earlier in the week after Australian Cricket legend Mike Hussey recorded a personal message wishing the girls all the best in the competition and congratulating the girls’ coach on all her hard work.
“Hi, Ms J, Mike Hussey here, just wanted to say congratulations and wanted to wish you all the best,” The message said.
“Thank you for the work you’ve done with the kids at Wellington Public School and please pass on my best wishes to the kids as they prepare to defend their PSSA championship.”
