I have heard the calls from Wellington residents and have been looking for a solution to the closure of the damaged suspension bridge between Cameron Park and Pioneer Park.

I was at Springfest and the Red Bull Branched Out competition and I understand it would have made travel between the two much simpler.

I know people would love to hear it was reopening soon but unfortunately the cost to repair the structural issues of the existing bridge makes it an unviable option. That is why I have been looking at alternatives.

The best way forward is to create a new masterplan for the area that would include a new bridge and a walking path along the edge of the Bell River.

We have seen how successful the Tracker Riley Cycleway has become in Dubbo, and I would like to see Wellington get a similar facility.

There is a growing appetite for scenic walking tracks and I think the edge of the Bell River would be a fantastic place for one. It is already a popular area for visitors.

It may be possible to locate the new bridge further along towards the Wellington Memorial Pool, which will also be a popular destination during the warmer months once it has been renovated and reopened next year.

That would have the advantage of making a longer loop, with a path that goes from there, right down to the Showground Road bridge and back along.

However the idea behind the creation of a masterplan and the public exhibition of it would be to get community feedback and find out what everyone wants.

It would allow Council to work out funding opportunities and also formulate a long-term vision that could benefit the town into the future.

Like always, I’d be interested to hear your view so feel free to email me at mayor@dubbo.nsw.gov.au
