The re-branding will coincide with the opening of the organisation’s repaved and resurfaced backyard event area and the unveiling of their NAIDOC 2018 mural.
The mural, designed by local artists Carmel and Denise Kelly, celebrates the theme of NAIDOC this year, “Because Of Her We Can”.
The artwork was commissioned by the WINS Community Centre team and CEO Helen Swan and involved contributions from local children.
“We’ve had a very successful NAIDOC week and we’ve commissioned Carmel and Denise to assist children who’d attended WINS in that week with painting a mural centered around this year’s theme,” Ms Swan said.
The mural was started off by the children, who painted bricks along the backyard’s rear wall, and then completed by the Kellys who took suggestions on the children about which famous and local aboriginal women to include.
The full mural will be unveiled on Sunday, October 7 at 11am at 27 Swift Street.
The new backyard area was made possible thanks to a $17000 dollar grant from the state government and Ms Swan is hopeful that the new yard area will provide the centre with more opportunities than the previous, burr-ridden dirt.
“We want to open the yard at night so that we can run more outdoor events,” Ms Swan said.
The expanded roster of outdoor events will complement the services already offered by WINS including their youth service program, their senior’s computer course and their other hosted services such as the Centrelink Agency, legal, financial and counselling services.
