Bev Hutchinson has put the call out to local women aged between 18 and 25 years old who are interested in vying for the chance to act as an ambassador for the town and the Wellington Show Society.
Ms Hutchinson encourages potential candidates who are interested in entering the competition to do so as soon as possible in order to become fully prepared ahead of the judging process.
The cut-off date for entries is April 20, with the official judging afternoon to be held at Macquarie Park on April 21.
Each candidate is required to partake in a 10 to 15 minute interview with judges surrounding future ambitions and goals, and are judged on their personal confidence, appearance and community involvement.
“They need to have a knowledge of local and rural issues affecting Wellington, that’s where we try help prepare them ahead of the judging afternoon,” she said.
“The ideal candidate would be self-motivated, enthusiastic with an ambition or desire to do well for themselves and help promote Wellington and our local show society.
“The progression of our showgirl through the year can be amazing. Who knows where the experience will lead them in the future. It is up to them.”
A winner and runner-up will be be announced at the Wellington Show opening on May 5.
They will then be required to conduct a multitude of showgirl activities throughout the day.
Ms Hutchinson said the future of the competition – established in 1962 – relies heavily on the support of local women. She believes small communities would be at a loss should the competition fold.
“We’re looking for the younger ones to come on board with new ideas and interest to keep our local Wellington Show going,” Ms Hutchinson said.
“It is a part of the country show movement that I wouldn’t like to see disappear from the country show scene.
“If it diminishes it’s just one other little cog in the slow-down of the country shows, and with all the different regulations it’s already becoming harder and harder to run the country show and find the community members willing to help organise the event.”
