Desire to help others

Gary, 18-years a Pastor at the Wellington Baptist Church, and his wife Shirley are preparing to move to the landlocked country in southeastern Africa where they plan on living for two years.

Their move is motivated by a drive to pass on their knowledge in theology and English to students at the Baptist Theological Seminary. They will represent a mission organisation through the Baptist Church and must raise their own funds to cover costs.

The pair believe to help others is their calling in life.

“Two years ago Malawi was listed as the poorest city in the world, so they need all the help they can get,” Shirley said.

“We believe that’s what God is calling us to do and because they are so poor and we have so many resources here in Australia we feel this is one way we can contribute.”

Gary explained most of the students – the majority being school-leavers in their late teens and early 20s – will study to become Pastors themselves.

“They are assessed in English and there is very little in Theology material which they can learn in their native tongue,” he said.

He said they are eager to contribute to the poverty-stricken country.

“It’s a helping hand for a short amount of time but education is very,” Gary said. “We are just excited to teach students who want to make a difference in their country.”

Baptist Church representative and good friend, Jenny Ryan, said their excitement is a feeling shared by the community.

“We share that joy,” Jenny said. “It’s sad to see them go but joyful about the whole thing.”

Shirley said the community can assist them in several ways ahead of their departure.

“They can pray for us and help finance us,” Gary said.
