The Western NSW Local Health District is offering casual work and the chance to acquire qualifications to people who are “really interested in having a career in mental health nursing”.

Ten scholarships are up for grabs with the health district’s nurse educator mental health Richard Whitton calling them a “really unique opportunity”.

“The scholarship means that you’ll be employed on a casual basis in mental health services in Orange while you undertake your Diploma of Nursing (Enrolled Nurse) training at TAFE,” he said.

“Under the scholarship program, graduates will also be offered employment as an enrolled nurse and will even be eligible for a reimbursement of student fees when they have been employed for 12 months.

“We know that offering the opportunity to work while they study is a great way to encourage people to complete their diploma and also remain in the field after they have graduated.”

Mr Whitton said it took a “very special and skilled person” to work as a mental health nurse. “There are a lot of opportunities in the mental health nursing field, and in the Western NSW Local Health District there are a number of locations where qualified enrolled nurses will be able to work and make a huge contribution in mental health.

“We would love people to apply for these scholarships who don’t just want a qualification or a job, but are really interested in having a career in mental health nursing.”
