Rallying cast members for upcoming production

WATS held a get together earlier this month in an attempt to draw interest for upcoming production ‘My Fair Lady’ set to hit the stage in the first weekend of June.

Co-director, Noel Grimes, said the event was well attended, attracting upward of 20 interested people, some of who are new to the group.

“We were delighted to welcome some new faces,” Mr Grimes said.

“We had some fresh young faces come along which is great because we need some new young talent.”

Focus now turns to a ‘muster’ evening to be held on January 22 from 7.30pm at the WATS Place next to Cactus Cafe. Mr Grimes invites anyone interested in playing a part in the production – be it on stage or behind the scenes – to attend.

“We need people on the stage, back stage, on lighting and sound, make-up and hair, dressing rooms – there’s a lot of people involved apart from the ones on stage, so if you’re not keen to get up on stage there’s plenty of other jobs,” he said.

The production will consist of 10 main characters, and will require further cast members to fill the chorus and background roles on stage. 

Some roles available include the lead role of Eliza Doolittle, who Mr Grimes describes as a “very, very cockney character” who with the help of Professor Higgins and Kernel Pickering is moulded into a lady.

Professor Higgins is also a star role. Originally played by Rex Harrison on the original stage in 1958, he is an upper crust professor who will appear on stage aside Eliza’s father, Alfred Doolittle, who is required to do several musical numbers, one being ‘Get Me To The Church On Time’.

“It is a big show, My Fair Lady, and a big show needs a large cast,” Mr Grimes said.

“The people involved get a lot out of it and I think the community looks forward to our shows.

“It’s another form of entertainment that’s fully local, all voluntary and we’d like to keep it going.”

My Fair Lady will be staged in the Civic Centre on June 2 and 3, 2018.
