The women’s division spared no mercy on last-placed Orana Spurs as they unleashed in a 14-nil victory at Dubbo.
The Warriors’ gained dominance through an impressive passing game which saw them put away nine goals in first half alone. The haul included the team’s first ever spot penalty which was successfully put away by Elle Flanagan which consequently was also her first senior goal.
After the break and some position changes the girls were on a roll yet again, the standout being Tarni Hawkins’ solo run from halfway before coolly finishing beyond the keeper’s grasp, her first goal.
The final result was 14-nil to Wellington. Goal scorers were Sally Nolan 3, Sam Gregory 3, Kahla Chown 2, Carla Rayson 2, and one each to Elle Flanagan, Kelly Chown, Tarni Hawkins and Jade Lang.
Player of the match was Sam Gregory.
The men’s division were pitted against top-of-the-table Newton Saints on home turf.
The game was a fast-paced affair with neither side able to establish dominance.
Wellington were slow off the blocks which allowed their opposition to control the game, however while Newtown enjoyed early dominance they weren’t able to break down Wellington’s solid defence.
Around 15 minutes into the game Wellington kicked into gear and took the lead through an excellenet individual goal from Ben Turner who jinked his way through several loose defenders to slow away the opener.
As the half progressed chances were few and far between, with the best falling to Wellington's Damien Beattie who unfortunately hit the post when through on goal.
The Warriors came out strongly and it wasn’t long before Paul Campion doubled the lead with a well-taken shot from just inside the box.
Newton threw everything at the Wellington goal, however time and time again they were repelled through excellent scrambling defence by the Warriors.
Wellington then had several excellent chances to extend their lead to a third goal, with the best of the bunch falling to Damien Bell, who unfortunately became a deer stuck in the proverbial headlights and was unable to get a shot away. This was to set the tone for the boys as they were now becoming wasteful in front of goal and thus allowing Newtown to remain in the contest.
With around 15 minutes remaining a goalmouth scramble saw Newtown score to make it 2-1. The final minutes were an intense affair with Newtown applying pressure, however Wellington held on to record an impressive win with Nick Streicher receiving man of the match.
The Wellington Wildcats played out an intense 4-all draw.
Both teams play away games this week – the girls taking on second-placed Narromine and the boys sixth-placed SDW.
