For the first time the town is in the seat of Dubbo, after formerly being in Orange, which is currently held by Andrew Gee.
Ken Grant said he was not surprised his son pursued a career in politics, although he said sometimes he's a little less cynical than you might expect for a politician.
"He has always shown great leadership," he said "His integrity is beyond reproach and he sometimes finds it hard to see wrong in people."
Troy Grant became leader after Andrew Stoner stood down from the job as National Party leader.
"It was a rapid rise for Troy but I have always held the belief he was a leader in the making," Ken Grant said, as he waited for his son to arrive.

The proud father discussed matters with ALP candidate Stephen Lawrence at the Wellington Civic Centre, and the pair appeared to be enjoying their chat as voters walked in to the first pre-polling day.
Troy Grant said his family as a great support.
"It's good to have them out here helping out and being part of the whole event," he said.
