The Bureau of Meteorology's Dean Narramore gave a severe weather update on Wednesday, warning widespread rainfall will effect large parts of NSW and north eastern Victoria on Thursday.
The wet weather is being caused by a cold front in southern Australia that is expected to tap into tropical moisture before moving east.
"Thursday morning, into Thursday afternoon, you can see widespread rainfall expected in the afternoon hours on Thursday with some heavy falls possible across the south west slopes and plains, snowy mountains and far north east Victoria," Mr Narramore said.
Rainfall totals of 50 to 100 millimetres with isolated falls in excess of 150 millimetres are possible in NSW and Victoria, which could bring minor to moderate flooding.
There are currently flood watch warnings in place for north east Victoria and inland NSW central and south west catchments.
Meanwhile in northern Tasmania, flood watches are also current with a number of rivers already experiencing minor flooding.
Mr Narramore said the heavy rainfall will "continue into the evening hours before quickly easing and contracting into southern Queensland with much lighter falls on Friday".
The meteorologist advised people in affected areas to stay up to date with warnings via the BoM website, app and social media and to listen to all advice from emergency services.
