His creativity is reflected in sculptures across the Riverina, but Andrew Whitehead felt like an interloper in taking on other artisans for Making It Australia.
Mr Whitehead is one of 13 contestants on the television show which debuts on Wednesday night and involves challenges between those with different talents in craft.
"I said to a few 'I think I'm the Volkswagen that snuck into the BMW car park who is going to get found out soon'," Mr Whitehead said.
"That's the way I thought about it, because they were so talented and skilled those other people."
"I thought I've got no hope, but I'll do it anyway," he said.
After eight stages, which included having to submit work videos, online interviews and challenges, he got selected, with filming starting in March in Sydney.
Making it Australia is based on a US show, but Mr Whitehead said having watched the original and been in the Down Under version there is a difference.
"The American show is pretty cheesy and I don't think it would go down really well with Australian audiences," he said.
"This one has a bit more adult humour and Australian comedy.
"I think it will be very well received by the Australian audiences because there's a varied demographic of contestants that people can back and follow their ideas."
Asked to tag his category, Mr Whitehead, 62, said old, male, white and farmer.
A former soldier who drove tanks, Mr Whitehead has been a full-time sculptor for the past five years with his statue of former Deputy Prime Minister Tim Fischer unveiled at Boree Creek in May.
Some of his rivals on the television show have skills in three-dimensional animation, party planning, prop making, costume creation and Aboriginal art.
Across each episode, each contestant will have to complete two tasks and the product will be judged by Game of Thrones production designer Deborah Riley and paper artist Benja Harney.
The overall winner scores $100,000 in prizemoney.
- Hosted by comedians Susie Yousef and Harley Breen, Making it Australia begins at 8.30pm on Wednesday night on Network 10.
