Following advice from the the Agricultural Societies Council of NSW, the Wellington Show Society have had to cancel the 2020 event, but the Showgirl competition will still run.

Competition coordinator Geena Purcell said despite a Show not being held this year, the most important thing for the Show Society was to still have a Wellington Showgirl as an ambassador for the town.

"The committee put a lot of time into thinking how we could continue to run this because it is a very important aspect of our Show," she said.

"It would be very disappointing to not have a representative of Wellington at the Zone 6 final next year. We didn't want it to come to that, so thought we needed to try our best to still get a Showgirl candidate."

Running the Showgirl competition this year will also give the winning entrant the chance to participate in the Zone 6 final judging and possibly the Sydney Royal Easter Show.

The Show Society committee are currently still in the final stages of organising the logistics and procedures of the Showgirl competition.

Due to the federal government's restrictions of gatherings and venues closing down, the Society will need to adhere to those and any further restrictions that may arise over the coming weeks.

"We are still in the final stages but we are open for potential candidates to get in touch, either through calling me directly or by messaging the Wellington Show Society Facebook page," Ms Purcell explained.

She is is no stranger to the competition, having been named as the Wellington Showgirl in 2017.

Then in 2018, Ms Purcell was selected as a finalist for The Land Sydney Royal Showgirl Competition.

She said it was important to keep the competition and is passionate about getting a candidate who is keen to represent their community and put their best foot forward.

"In this day and age it's just trying our best to continue to run the Showgirl competition, because we don't want to lose that part of tradition in our town," Ms Purcell added.

Despite all the difficulties, Ms Purcell wants to ensure that all candidates have a special time.

"I think the main message is; if you are interested in being the Wellington Showgirl for 2020, register your interest so we do know you're keen to participate in the competition," she said.

"We will keep them in the loop as to what's going on, and obviously the government are still announcing changes at present, so I think it's a watch and wait situation."

Ms Purcell said there were a lot of opportunities for young who enter the Showgirl competition, with candidates receiving personal etiquette training and public speaking development.

Entrants will be judged on their personality, presentation, confidence, general and rural knowledge and community involvement.

They must be aged from 18 to under 25 years as at May, 1, 2021.
