Wykes hopes he and Stokes will be able to bring in more structure to the side.

"Last year was obviously their first year in the competition," Wykes explained.

"Being a contact sport they did really well. They did a lot better than I think what they were even expecting.

"So I think this year (the goal) is to go one more step further."

Wykes said a lot of the Redbacks players come from the Group 11 league tag competition with the Cowgirls, so will play on both days of the weekend.

Despite retiring from playing in 2019, Wykes wanted to remain involved with the Wellington Redbacks club and thought a dual coach role would be the perfect opportunity to allow that.

Interest from players was high with 19 people putting up their hand to play in the Redbacks side, he said.

"They picked up a few extra players just through word-of-mouth.. I think they're going to have a pretty good roll-up," Wykes added.

Despite it being 10-a-side, having the extra numbers was great when considering players will have other commitments throughout the year or even injuries, the coach said.

While the draw has not yet been released, and probably won't be for another few months, Wykes hopes they can start fresh at training this week.

He has been involved with the Redbacks for about 13 years and only a few year's ago was the club's president.

Being involved in the Wellington Redbacks senior men's side premiership win last year was a "blessing in disguise."

"All these years I was saying 'I'm not retiring until I win a grand final', but (last year) I thought even if we lose I've got to pull the pin," he said.

"The knees and body can't handle it anymore."

Wellingotn Redbacks Rugby Club vice-president Greg Brien said the women's side was new to the Oilplus Cup competition last year, but realised early on that rugby was a tough game.

"But geez we kicked some butt last year," he added.

"No-one expected a lady's team that was just forming to perform the way that Wellington did. So I'm pretty sure there is some unfinished business.

"And I think some of these Wellington girls can really make a mark on the competition."

The Lion of Waterloo has come back on board as the Wellington Redback's major sponsor and all homes games will again be played at Bicentennial Park, Montefiores.
