Gold Coast LNP MP Jann Stuckey made the comments after quitting politics, citing an ongoing battle with depression and bullying.

Ms Stuckey says she feels sorry for her replacement after hearing colleagues suggest they just needed a woman to contest her seat.

"I was hearing from colleagues, they want a skirt Jann, they want a skirt, any skirt will do," she told Macquarie Radio Network on Wednesday.

Lawyer Laura Gerber has been selected by the Liberal National Party to contest the seat of Currumbin in the Queensland by-election triggered by Ms Stuckey's resignation.

Gender had nothing to do with her preselection, party leader Deb Frecklington said.

The party states it chooses people on merit.

But Ms Frecklington contradicted herself multiple times on Wednesday when questioned by reporters about the process.

More than 100 LNP members backed Ms Gerber's preselection during an event hosted by a branch on Tuesday night, she said.

Ms Frecklington then said Ms Gerber was unanimously supported by the party's state executive.

She also said Ms Gerber applied to run as a candidate months ago, before then going on to say it was just weeks ago.

Ms Frecklington refused to be drawn on accusations Ms Stuckey had been bullied within the party, repeating earlier accusations that any attacks against her had come from Labor.

Meanwhile, Ms Gerber said Ms Stuckey was a role model who had contributed enormously to her community.

"I want to follow in her footsteps, I want to continue her good work," she said.

Ms Stuckey has declined to comment further.
