Staggs was a prominent player in 2019 for the Brisbane Broncos and recently signed on a one-year extension, meaning he's locked up until the end of the 2021 season.
Speaking to the Brisbane Broncos' official website, Staggs announced he would like to represent NSW in the state of origin this year.
"But first I want to get my spot in the team," Staggs said.
"Play consistent footy in the year and I want to be able to represent my state as well.
"That's the one thing I'm going to go for this year, play for NSW."
Staggs said he grew up watching the state of origin series.
"I wanted to play on that big stage and if I can get the opportunity to do that I'm going to do everything I can," he said.
But before he sets his mind on the Origin series, Staggs is focusing on his 2020 NRL season.
He has been in rehab for a broken toe, which he injured while playing for Tonga against Australia during the Indigenous All Stars match.
"It's been a couple of months now that I haven't been in full training," Staggs explained.
"It's been different, it's been hard. It's just one thing you don't want to be in, rehab.
"You want to be out on the field touching the ball."
While it has been tough, Staggs said he was going well and has been back training with the Broncos.
"It's basically two hours of running, it's not fun," he said.
"Hopefully I can be fit and ready for the trials and fit and ready for round one."
Staggs has been a prominent centre for Broncos, having scored 11 tries in 24 appearances, but said there were a lot of young boys vying for the position too.
"They're doing really well. I'm watching them at training. It's a pretty tough couple of players I've got to compete with," he said.
"I've just got to go out there and do my job and train the best that I can and hopefully that centre spot is going to be mine."
