Dubbo Regional Council director liveability Skye Price said Wellington families had flocked to the new centre to enjoy relief from the increasing summer heat.

"The average daily patronage since the wonderful new aquatic centre opened just under a month ago has been around 200 people. This figure will only increase with school holidays about to begin and the real heat of summer setting in," she said.

Enrolments for learn-swim classes at the centre in term four had been 111 and council staff had delivered classes for 75 budding swimmers.

The centre boasts an eight-lane pool with disabled access, heated exercise and learn-to-swim pool and splash pad.

Ms Price said water play areas, or splash pads, were the latest trend in aquatic recreation.

"Splash pads incorporate various types of water elements including a relatively flat surface covered with colourful resilient surfacing, interactive water sprays emanating from the ground; and vertical play elements," she said.

"They highlight a deliberate focus on accessibility, safety, innovation and affordability."

Wellington Aquatic Leisure Centre is also being used for the town's swimming club twice a week and a regular aqua aerobics class.

Entry to the new centre is by $2 gold coin until Australia Day as part of a special thank you from Dubbo Regional Council to the Wellington community that was without a swimming pool last summer while the centre was constructed.
