Under level four water restrictions, council has set a daily target of 280L of water per person.

To help residents stick to the target, council has a guide on how much water different activities in the home use. The biggest water user is the shower. A five minute shower uses 100L of water, more than a third of the daily target.

The next biggest user is the washing machine. One front load wash cycle uses 70L of water.

Small activities can quickly add up. Council estimates 10L of water is used per person each day for hand washing and teeth brushing, while about 12L is used to flush the toilet.

Cooking is expected to only use three litres, while cleaning uses two.

For those who want to calculate their daily water usage, council recommends noting the number on the water meter, then checking it again a week later.

Subtract the first number from the second, then divide it by seven to calculate the daily household usage. Divide that figure by the number of people in the household.
