The statue, named Arthur after Mount Arthur, had its horn stolen leaving it with extensive damage.

Dubbo Regional Council staff have been made aware of the incident.

"It was disappointing to see someone take this rhino horn," DRC mayor Ben Shields said.

"When things like this happen, money has to be reallocated to fix the rhino, or we have to wait to see if we can secure grant funding, which means other areas might miss out too."

This act of vandalism has been reported to police, but for now, it isn't clear when, or if, Arthur will return to his home at Wellington.

The statue was painted by a local artist and school student, to capture some of the iconic features of Wellington.

Cr Shields said it was sad to see someone within that community doesn't value the significant of the rhino statue.

"The rhino has been taken to a secure location, where he is protected, however, we don't know if he'll ever return home," he added.

Unfortunately, council does not have any spare rhinos to replace the one vandalised in Wellington, and without an infinite pool of money, Arthur may not be around for people to enjoy.
