The ladies in purple experienced their first loss in the opener, with the under 13s side battling through a back and forth affair against the visiting Mudgee Dragons before a late try to Mudgee ended a fightback led by Goannas' player of the match Emma Edwards and awarded the Dragons juniors a 20 - 16 win.
"We were 14 - 0 down at halftime, we just said we had to get back to our basics, get running onto the ball, getting our body in front and making tackles," Coach Kaitlyn Mason said.
"Our second half was much better, Mudgee ended up scoring right on the buzzer and getting the win, but it was 14 - 14 for the last ten minutes or so, it was a really good, hard fought game from both sides."
Mason's under 15s etched in a second win after a fast starting performance that saw them hold Mudgee to just two converted tries worth of points while tallying up 42 of their own.
"I was very proud of their effort this week, we had a chat before the game and I told them that they needed to be a bit more physical to start, we went through some drills and got into the right mindset and we needed to get into that grind early," Mason said.
"That first ten minutes, they really pushed and supported each other and were covering well out wide, so it was a really good effort from all the girls."
ALSO MAKING NEWS:
Mason's responsibilities this week extended to the under 18 side as well who once again put together an emphatic performance under the guidance of Western star Taneka Todhunter.
"Taneka does all those one percent things very well, she guided the girls across the park, everywhere the ball was, she popped up too, she's got that footy brain, where she just calms the girls and they play a lot better."
The under 18s side held their opponents scoreless at 60 - 0 at full time, as did the Opens side, who had a perfect 50 - 0 score sheet at the end of the day.
Mason says the results are down to the culture that the Goannas have tried to foster throughout the last few years.
"The older girls get there early to cheer on the younger teams, it's such a great culture to be a part of and it's going to be set there for years to come; I feel very lucky and honoured to be a part of it."
The Goannas next head to Condobolin to take on Woodbridge, while the 15s will play in Parkes on Wednesday.
