The annual awareness day first began in 1974 to encourage worldwide awareness and action to protect the environment.

Over two days the Wellington Buddhist Centre will hold their own event where visitors will be able to make their own potpourri, learn how to upcycle and will also go into an eco raffle draw.

This will be the first time that the Wellington Buddist Centre have hosted a World Environment Day celebration, nun Choden said.

Choden said the Wellington Buddist Centre they have always had a strong focus on environmental awareness and the teacher wanted to do something for World Environment Day that involved the community.

"So we could all come together and think about what we could do in our daily life that helps the environment," Choden explained.

"I guess we feel like we're making a contribution to a better world. It's like small steps, but it feels like if you come together as a community and do that, then you can feel the impact."

The first 25 people to come over the two days will receive a sample bag filled with various environmentally friendly products.

Choden said the days were about learning, making things and having fun together.

"You might just want to come to a particular session that interest you, or you might want to come for the whole afternoon and just see what you can learn or what you can contribute as well," she explained.

The Wellington Buddist Centre nun said the environment is part of who we are, how we live and it's where we live.

"The more stress we have, the less we care about our environment," Choden said.

"Yoga and Tai Chi help us to relax and reduce stress, creating space for us to think more about the future of our environment, for our children and our children's children.

"We will be holding two introduction classes at the beginning of each day of eco activities, an Intro to Yoga on the Saturday and an Intro to Tai Chi on the Sunday."

The event is being held from June 8-9 at 166 Arthur Street from 12pm to 4pm over both days.
