Wellington's Soldier's Memorial Club will host retired Detective Chief Inspector Gary Raymond, who has received both an Order of Australia medal and the Australian Police medal, to discuss suicide prevention strategies.

Mr Raymond who has attended some of Australia's worst disasters and most horrific crimes during his decades of service, has held talks around the world on the topic and was invited to speak in Wellington by friend Terry Beauchamp.

"Gary's interest is in helping people," Mr Beauchamp said.
"He's a former police negotiator, his life was written about in the 'Top Cop' series of books."
Mr Raymond's service also extended to police rescue where he responded to the Granville Train Disaster and the Thredbo landslide.
Since retiring from the police force, Mr Raymond has worked as a uniformed officer in the Salvation Army and currently acts as a chaplain for a number of community groups.
"My wife and I took one of these courses previously while working with an organisation called Fresh Start previously and it was greatly beneficial and we needed a refresher course," Mr Beauchamp said.
"These courses are run for free, Gary's running this one for free and if people want to donate on the day we'll make sure those contributions go to local farmers."
Those interested can attend the course at the Wellington Soldier's Memorial Club on Saturday May 4.
The talk will begin at 10am and conclude by 4pm and will cover a variety of topics.
Light refreshments will be provided.
