The Wellington Boot Race Carnival promises a weekend full of action with 16 races set test the skills of trainers and jockeys along with the pace of their gallopers. Over $500,000 in prize money is on offer across the two days of racing with a minimum of $30,000 per race and the feature race, the Wellington Boot, giving the best in country racing over $100,000 for the first past the line.

Last years winner Miss Invincible, ridden by Greg Ryan, beat Shinju and Adagirl by half a length to take out the 2018 crown with Wellington Race Club President, Ian Darney, saying upgraded facilities at the track with great prize money always helps to attract the best trainers and horses. “First prize for the 'Boot' itself is $76,500 which can be increased up to another $38,5000 with the BOBS bonus. It really makes the trip worthwhile for both country and city based trainers,” he said.

Saturday, April 6 will see six races held ranging from the 900 metre Maiden Handicap for sprinters through to the 2400 metre Iron Horse Handicap which will be sure to test the staying power of the field. On Sunday, April 7 eight races are on the program with the feature races, the Ian Giffin Wellington Cup and the Wellington Boot, set to be hotly contested as connections vie for prize money and bragging rights. The Wellington Race Club is anticipating some very strong fields for this years event with nominations set to close on Tuesday, April 2.
Anyone in town for the races has their shot at sharing in some winnings with the ever popular Calcutta to be held at the Wellington Soldiers Memorial Club on the Saturday night of the carnival.
