Wellington skipper Elton Keeffe said his side was gunning to knock off perennial Central West District Golf Association heavyweights Duntryleague in last weekend’s opening round, and they delivered on that promise.
The small-town club won 3-2 at Dubbo Golf Club on Sunday in a stunning boilover, the victory stripping Wellington of the outsiders tag they took into the clash as well.
Keeffe and Lewis McCarthy picked up victories in their individual match-ups, defeating Dave Corby and Nathan Button respectively, while Wellington’s third win came courtesy of Joe Ryan, who incredibly knocked off Robert Payne three and two.
Tyson Lane and Andy Campbell picked up Duntryleague’s two individual wins by beating Ben McCarthy and Matt Reid respectively, the latter’s win coming on the second play-off hole.
With Dubbo and Mudgee both having an opening round bye the victory shoots Wellington to the top of the standings in pool A of division one, while Forbes claimed the equivalent spot in pool B.
With individual wins from Peter Nixon, Shane Sallaway, Mark Collits and Steve Betland Forbes easily accounted for Parkes 4-1, while in the pool’s other match-up Bathurst defeated Cowra 3-2.
In a massive weekend for the club Wellington actually defeated Duntryleague in all four divisions, also winning 4-1, 3-2 and 3-2 in divisions two, three and four respectively.
Dubbo Golf Club begins its campaign this weekend, taking on the ladder-leading Wellington at Orange’s Wentworth course.
