Division one skipper Elton Keeffe says his side’s goal is to win its opening two rounds and all-but gift the Wellington side a top two spot in pool A, which will ensure the club plays finals in 2019.
But that’s a lot easier said than done.
Wellington takes on Duntryleague in round one this Sunday at Dubbo and then makes the trip to Orange to take on Dubbo at Wentworth in round two.
Keeffe labelled the experienced Duntry side “one of the teams to beat” while Dubbo progressed through to last year’s final, where they lost against Mudgee – the three-time reigning pennants champs are also in pool A.
The pools are drawn geographically to help minimise travel for clubs.
That benefit is a double edged sword for Wellington though, handing Keeffe’s side an extremely tough path to progress through to the finals.
I think we’ll go reasonably well.

The big-hitting Wellington skipper says his side is more than up to the task though.
“We don’t have a point to prove, not really, we’d rather just go out there and win,” Keeffe said.
“I think we’ll go reasonably well. Most of the boys are still playing golf.”
The Wellington division one team will be led by Keeffe, with Cusack brothers Kurt and Mitchell, Lewis McCarthy and Joe Ryan making up the rest of the team.
“We’ve just got to play good golf,” Keeffe added.
In other round one match-ups, Mudgee and Dubbo both have a round one, division one bye, although Mudgee’s lower grades will take on Wentworth in divisions two, three and four.
Wenty didn’t nominate a top grade side in 2019.
In pool B at Ex-Services Club, Orange, Bathurst takes on Cowra and Forbes will face Parkes in their respective opening rounds.
