“One of our Lions thought that collecting the cans and bottles would be a good idea and it has been,” Lions President Chris Hardy said.
“In the past year he has collected $5000 plus worth, it is such as success that one of our oldest and the longest-serving Lion has started helping too.”
Some of the work has drawn criticism from onlookers.
“They’ve been getting a bit of flack because he actually goes though the garbage cans in town and picks up cans and bottles thrown down by the roads,” Mrs Hardy said.
“If he didn't pick them out of the garbage bins it would be more landfill and more waste, if he didn't pick them off the roadside the entrances to the town would look untidier.”
Money raised by the Lions’ work recycling through the Return and Earn scheme has allowed them to donate to funds deovted to cancer research, local groups and transport and travel cost for sporting groups.
