The now ten year old Something Borrowed, winner of the $100,000 Country Championship Qualifier at Dubbo in March 2016, returned to form when winning the Alan Lloyd Memorial Handicap ( 1600 metres ) at Narromine last Thursday for local trainer Justin.W.Stanley and the owner-breeder Terry Marskell from Mudgee.
Something Borrowed had gone 26 starts without a win since taking out the Warren Cotton Cup from Our Sarastro and Laugharne in November 2016 with the only placing being a third to Gentleman Max in the 2017 Forbes Cup.
Brilliantly ridden at Narromine by Greg Ryan, Something Borrowed ( $3.10 ) weaved through the field from well back and finished strongly to beat Mackellars Love ( Jake Pracey-Holmes-Holmes, $13 ) and The Frick ( Grant Buckley, $2.70 favourite ).
Something Borrowed ( by Volitant from Wedded Chimes ) did not start racing until 5 years of age and was initially trained at Dubbo by the late John McKinnon who had been a successful harness racing trainer-driver.
At debut Something Borrowed finished fourth in a Maiden Handicap won by Mickey Spanooch at Bligh Picnics in May 2014 but at the 5th start promised better to come when ridden by Kody Nestor in a Maiden win at Warren from Tuliman and Sutton Bailey.
Six starts later in August 2015, Kacie Chater was the jockey in a win at Coonabarabran and then Something Borrowed ran seconds at Narromine, Coonamble, Bathurst, Dubbo and Warren and during this time John McKinnon due to ill health handed over the training to his good friend Justin.W.Stanley.
With Aaron Bullock in the saddle, Something Borrowed won the Western Racing Association Country Championship at Dubbo from Not A Shadow and Farewell Julia in March 2016 and then finished a creditable eighth Of 16 in the $400,000 Final over 1400 metres at Royal Randwick won by the outstanding Clearly Innocent.
Subsequent good performances by Something Borrowed included wins at Dubbo ( 1600 metres ),Gosford ( 2100 metres ), a third at Warwick Farm ( 2200 metres ), second to Any Blinkin’ Day in the Dubbo Cup and third to Can I Have in the Coonamble Cup.
Prior to the Narromine win last week Something Borrowed had resumed from a spell and with two good runs at Dubbo had indicated a return to form.
Daniel Northey has twice endured lengthy times on the sidelines with a broken pelvis however the 28 year old Scone based jockey has made successful returns to racing ,the latest comeback yielding wins with outstanding rides on Lope De Mango ( Warren ) and on A Magic Zariz in the 1300 metres AG N VET Open Handicap at Narromine.
Urged through a narrow opening by Daniel Northey, A Magic Zariz ( $5.50 ) came from the back of the field to score a thrilling win over Know How ( Brandon Griffiths, $5.50 ) and Zoutenant ( Wendy Peel, $3.50 favourite ).
Bred and raced by Wal And Leonie Prout from Gilgandra and trained at Coonamble by Cec Hodgson, A Magic Zariz has the impressive record of nine wins and eight placings from 27 starts.
Four men with significant contributions to Racing, Max Crockett, Max Frankel, Errol French and John “Sam” Glasgow have sadly passed away over recent weeks.
Max Crockett the legendary horse breaker at Randwick for champion trainers such as Tommy Smith, Bart Cummings, Les Bridge and Jack Denham later continued his trade at Mudgee where he was also a successful trainer with the most recent winner being Mackellars Love at Orange.
Max Frankel was a stock and station agent at Tullibigeal and as a prolific owner of racehorses achieved his 100th winner back in 2011 at a Wagga Wagga meeting.
Errol French from Tamworth raced hundreds of gallopers , most with the the word Blinkin’ in their name including the Dubbo Cup winner Any Blinkin’ Day trained by Clint Lundholm.
John “Sam “ Glasgow from Tullibigeal was a very well liked racegoer and more recently was an owner of the promising Caszar trained at Forbes by Barry Molloy and a fast finishing second at Narromine last Thursday.
The $50,000 Mudgee Cup features at the Mudgee Showcase TAB meeting on Friday followed by Dubbo ( TAB ) on Monday, Warren Twilights ( TAB ) on Friday, December 14 and the annual Charity Sports Day and racing fraternity get together commencing 3pm Saturday, December 15.
