The centre-piece of the evening, however, was the unveiling of the organisation’s commissioned NAIDOC mural by local artists to represent the theme of ‘Because of Her We Can’.
Artists Denise Kelly and Carmel Lancaster gave a speech about the artistic process that they went through when working with local children to design and paint the mural.
Elder Aunty Violet Lousick provided the Welcome to Country before the evening’s festivities and the Deputy Mayor Anne Jones was on hand to formally announce the re-launch.
Board member and Elder Janet Henman was given the honor of cutting the tape to officially open the centre’s new rear courtyard area.
The renovations to the center’s backyard area have entailed diamond-patterned paving stones, a green lawn and a lighting system so that the centre can use the backyard for night time activities and events.
The decision to re-brand and relaunch the centre came earlier in the year, when staff and board members elected to give the organisation a fresh look amidst a series of applications for grants for renewal and revamp options.
