“We’ve got 24 people registered in the Wallaby Wheel which is double last year,” Mr Campbell said.
“So really excited about that and it shows that we can integrate para sports seamlessly into a major sporting event like the Dubbo Stampede.”
A total of 87 participants have signed on for the 42.2km Rhino Ramble Marathon, while the organising committee is expecting an influx of registrations in the highly popular 5.3km Dingo Dash.
The shorter distance was especially good for families, Mr Campbell said.
“It’s very easy to get caught up in the busyness of life,” he said.
“We’ve got three small kids ourselves, so we certainly understand, but you need to make some time and the Dubbo Stampede is the perfect opportunity to get out there and for a walk and see something you wouldn’t normally see.
“We’re so privileged to have the zoo here right in our backyard and it’s a great chance to get out and see the animals at the zoo.”
Those interested in competing in the 10km Cheetah Chase and 21.1km Zebra Zoom Half Marathon – events with limited numbers due to the logistics – are being urged to get in quick before tickets sell out.
Participants will compete for $10,000 in prize money, with everyone to receive a participation medal and free entry to the zoo on Saturday or Sunday.
After many months of planning, Mr Campbell said the committee was looking forward to seeing “many smiling faces” at the zoo on Sunday.
“The Stampede is like a wedding; it takes all year to organise and then it’s over in one weekend,” he said.
“But like a wedding it’s a celebration. It’s a really positive community environment and if people haven’t registered yet, jump online and grab your tickets.”
The first race to commence will be the 42.2km Rhino Ramble Marathon at 7am, while the most popular event, the 5.3km Dingo Dash will start at 7.30am.
