50 years ago in August 1967 construction of Burrendong Dam, one of the largest in NSW was finally completed. Burrendong Dam employed hundreds of men and took 21 years to complete. The library is hosting a special event on Wednesday 16 August at 11am to commemorate this milestone with guest speakers, including representatives from Water NSW, talking about the operation, history and construction of Burrendong Dam.

To commemorate the 200th anniversary of John Oxley’s exploration of the Macquarie River in 1817, Macquarie Regional Library is hosting a special talk on John Oxley and the Wellington Valley on Friday 18 August at 11am presented by Curators from the State Library of NSW. Original maps and journals from John Oxley’s 1817 expedition will also be on display. Both events will be followed by light refreshments. Book Week August 19 – Escape to Everywhere
Every year the Children’s Book Council of Australia presents annual awards to books of literary merit, for outstanding contribution to Australian children’s literature. A shortlist of the best entries in each category is made and winners selected from there. Macquarie Regional Library holds copies of the shortlisted books which will be available to borrow at the conclusion of Book Week. The library will be running a Children’s Book Week colouring competition for children from Kinder to Year 6 with great prizes to be won. Completed entries need to be returned to your local branch of Macquarie Regional Library by Friday August 18.
