Landmark, a 21 month-old son of Yavenvale Humdinger H472 (P) and from the Valma Odyssey sired Grathlyn Chance H32 (TW) (P) the junior and grand champion at the 56th annual Herefords Australia National Show and Sale at Dubbo last week, was exhibited by the Rayner family, Grathlyn stud, Hargraves.
The bull had an eye muscle area (EMA) of 129 square centemetres at 922 kilograms with milk teeth and a scrotal circumference of 40cm, and stood second in the earlier European Union index performance class.
Judge, Roger Evans, Nagol Park Shorthorns and Bovine Scanning Services, Tamworth, said Landmark had “that natural sire appeal”.
“A good neck and head carriage and real strong jaw with a body that follows with tremendous expression and really good capacity to him,” he said.
When awarding Landmark the grand championship, he said “overall, that little extra growth for age and just a little bit more versatility in options, plus his tremendous sirey head put him ahead”.
“I think whatever herd he ends up in, he will do a great job for them.”
Associate judge was James Forsyth of Calrossy Anglican School, Tamworth.
Intermediate champion, was the supermarket index performance class winner, Allendale Gambler L143 (P) by Allendale Chinchilla J23, a 23 month-old weighing 922kg and an EMA of 138sqc and 39cm scrotum.
Gambler was exhibited by the Day family, Allendale stud, Bordertown, South Australia, and admired by Mr Evans ‘for that extra muscle expression – a bull that’s going to continue to grow”.
Senior champion, Kenevel FJ L358 (P), came from the Rylstone district’s Keech family, Kenevel stud, and is sired by Minlacowie Dynamic (AI) (P). This bull weighed 998kg at 26 months and had an EMA of 130sqc and 40cm scrotal circumference and according to Mr Evans, the most structurally sound of the senior bulls.
Reserve junior champion was The Ranch Landlord L53 (P) by Days Barbarian F26 shown by Greg and Del Rees, The Ranch stud, Tomingley, said, by the judge as being “very similar” style of bull to the junior and grand.
Reserve intermediate ribbon went to Gundongs Laser (P) by Tycolah Havoc (P) shown by Glenn and Christine Pugh and family, Gundongs stud, Tomingley.
