JUNIOR RUGBY
It was like celebrating a grand final win against Narromine Gorrillas at Montefiores on Saturday when our under-13s cracked their first win of the season.
The excited supporters who have had little to cheer about recent weeks nearly rocked the little grandstand off its haunches as the two sides scored try for try throughout the match allowing the Redbacks to go to the break with a 17 to 12 lead.
Alistair Hardwick bolsted the tally with a long range effort before the young Gorillas surged to pile on three tries in succession to take the lead.
Sometimes big occasions require big men and Noah Brien was the man for the job busting through the Narromine line to put the Redbacks back in front, a very nerve racking five minutes followed but the Wellington line held leaving the final score in their favour 34 to 29.
The 15s were less fortunate in their game against the Narromine Parkes combined squad, Wellington scored first before conceding a couple of tries Allan Riley who finished the day with a hat trick scored his second before the break which left the Redbacks trailing 15 to 10.
Wellington scored first in the second bout but lacklustre defence at times allowed Narromine to go on with the job finishing too strong to take the game 29 to 15.
The 17s hit the road to meet an under strength Forbes side which resulted in a win the Redbacks were exceptionally good in the first half which gave them a 20 to 5 lead but as has happened to often this season the quality of their game fell away in the second half.
A 31 to 19 full-time score line sounds impressive but in order to compete against the big guns come semi final time their intensity and commitment to the game will need to lift to another level.
All teams have a general bye this weekend.
