Airle Mason and Lilly Clarke were selected for the team after trialing at Port Macquarie this week.
The girls trialed alongside a handful of St Mary’s Primary School students who represented Wellington at the NSW Touch Football Polding Trials on June 2.
Demi Owens, Bridgette Carney, Emily Smith, Bonnie Sheridan, Lilly Clarke, Daniel Kierle, Airlie and Max Mason attended the trials where they competed against the best touch players in the Catholic Diocese.
It comes after their selection into the Bathurst Diocese team in November 2016.
The boys’ team finished second overall with big wins against Wilcanya/Forbes, Tamworth/Armidale, Lisomore, a draw against Broken Bay and a loss to Newcastle.
The girls team also did exceptionally well to finish equal first.
They too were just edged out by Newcastle, but defeated Broken Bay who defeated Newcastle which gave the three teams an equal finish.
At the completion of the day four St Mary’s Wellington girls were called on to form a ‘possible and probable’ team. Airle Mason, Bridgette Carney, Emily Smith and Lilly Clarke were given the opportunity to compete for the chance to play for the Polding team.
They all had fun and displayed a high level of sportsmanship.
- Alistaire Thompson
Teacher Alistaire Thompson said all of the girls played very well and left everything on the field after a big day of touch football.
Mason and Clarke were eventually selected to represent the Polding team at the NSW Trials at Wagga in August.
“We are all very proud of our two girls, it is a great achievement to make the Polding team,” Thompson said.
“All Wellington students should be very proud of there performance in Port Macquaire – they all had fun and displayed a high level of sportsmanship.”
Students will back-up their performance this week as they compete in the Primary Touch Gala Day on Wednesday and the Regional Carnival on Thursday in Dubbo.
