It was a huge feat for the team who broke a nine-year drought to have their school engraved on the shield for the eighth time since 1988.
The team travelled to Maintland on Tuesday, November 28 to compete in the state semi-final against South Wagga.
A win progressed the Wellington side onto the finals against Bolwarra Public School who they were successful in defeating to claim the state title.
The victory comes after a year-long lead-up through which the girls defeated Gulgong Public School, Cudgegong Valley, Blayney Public School, Mortdale Public School and Newport Public School.
Team coach, Liz Jeffery, said while the whole team put in a gallant effort it was opening batter and vice captain, Alex Morley, who was a standout player having retired 41 not out in both innings.
Captain Callee Black was a standout across the board.
The strike bowler – a fast leftie – took two wickets in game one and continued to upset the opposition in the final.
Going off her performance it comes as no surprise why the junior was selected to represent the NSW Invitational Team in January 2018.
Black gave a shoutout to Morley for an exceptional effort.
“Alex was player of the match – she retired twice at 41,” she said.
She also acknowledged the contribution of Heavenly Dwyer who had a strong batting game.
Naylise Thompson, Alex Morley, Jiaan Cubby and Heavenly Dwyer all took a wicket each in the match against Wagga.
Jeffery thanked the parents of team members as well as Wellington businesses who put in many hours in travel and support throughout the year to make the opportunity possible.
“We can’t do it without them,” she said.
“WACHS lent us the bus to travel, and the Wellington Soldiers Memorial Club, Coles and Wellington Cowboys Rugby League Football Club assisted with donations.”
