The Pups – who continue to chase their first win in the Wellington Touch Association summer competition – outclassed their opposition to claim the title.
Organiser Alistaire Thompson said it was a last minute decision to present the cup as an encouragement award – an award they felt was very deserving for the Pups.
“It was between the Pups, Bowlos, Morley’s Earth Moving and the Pirates,” Thompson said.
“They’re our junior teams, and have also probably been our most reliable in regards to everyone showing up and just playing a lot of touch.
“We really want to support our junior teams – not only have they been playing but they’ve been referring games too, they haven’t missed one duty for referring either.”
The Cob Loaf Cup was presented to representatives from the Pups team in Cameron Park on Wednesday night following the conclusion of the round.
Team members Lilly Clarke and Demi Owens were presented the cup by COB Loaf Festival organiser, Andrew McKay and Wellington Touch president, Graham Blackhall.
“They were very excited to win the cup and probably surprised, but it’s a great thing to keep the competition fresh after Round 5 to give them something to stay keen,” Thompson said.
Thompson praised the attitude of all teams on the night.
“The great thing about the mood is no one worries about the score at the end of the game, they’re all out there having fun,” he said.
“Everyone showed up and played really well, there was some big scoring.
“The way the competition's going at the moment there’s probably three or four teams sticking out a bit. Mean Machine and the Blues are both undefeated and not far behind is the Wolf Pack.”
Thompson said the Association was impressed at the condition of the fields at Pioneer Park.
“The fields there are amazing and it made for some very fast touch,” he said. “It’s definitely something we have to consider in future, moving down there.”
