Between 300 and 354 entries competed across the three days in what Wellington Valley Kennel Club secretary/manager, Don Mahoney, said is phenomenal for a Central West show.
The biggest Wellington winner of the weekend went to Diana Mahoney in the Jack Russell Terrier Open Bitch on Friday with New Zealand import, Champion Imlay Kit Kat. Diana took out Best of Breed, Best Terrier and runner-up Best in Show.
The judging panel, consisting of Margaret Jones of Canada, Gary Doyle of New Zealand and Jacson Kim of Korea, agreed the quality of dogs from across NSW and interstate exceeded their expectations.
“We’re in a small town away from the city, and when I looked at the Best in Show line-up for Sunday it could have competed anywhere, and I’ve judged in over 20 countries,” Margaret said.
“It was a great weekend certainly with dogs I didn’t expect to see in a smaller community.”
A standout for Jacson was the strong coat of a “real” Australian Cattle Dog which he said differs greatly to the soft coat of the same breed shown in the Philippines and Indonesia.
Don hailed the show a success and thanked those who made it possible, including the race club for the venue and the Cow and Calf for catering.
“Thank you to the people of Wellington for making exhibitors and our judges so welcome,” he said.
