Wellington High hosted students from St Mary’s Catholic School in the local derby on Wednesday morning.
Intensity was at a high as students challenged for the highly sought after silverware.
After a tough tussle in the girl’s division it was Wellington High who planted the winning point on their rivals in a nail-biting 2-1 victory.
However the win didn’t come easy, as St Mary’s hammered the try line in the final 10 minutes only to have three tries disallowed.
St Mary’s Catholic School teacher, Alistaire Thompson, said it was a heartbreaking loss.
“It was very tight but Wellington High held on very well defensively at the end and it could’ve gone either way,” he said.
It was a different story in the boy’s division as a handy Wellington High team took the honors to the tune of 11-3.
Victories aside it was the true display of sportsmanship from both schools which shone on the day, according to Thompson.
“It was played in very good sportsmanship which was fantastic to see,” he said.
Wellington High School principal, Rod Cosier, presented the Don Green Cup to the winning teams at the completion of the day.
