Organisers are giving the knockout another pump after postponing the event earlier in the year due to a lack of interest.
In a move to increase registrations staff from the QuitBFit – Tackling Indigenous Smoking Program have opted to allow non-indigenous players to get involved.
QuitBFit tobacco action worker, Rikka Lamb, said teams can now be made up of 30 per cent non-indigenous players, and 70 per cent must be indigenous with a confirmation of Aboriginality.
It will be held at Caltex Park, Dubbo over the weekend of November 11 and 12 and will be open to men, women and mixed teams at a cost of $500.
Lamb said only 32 teams will be accepted per division with a minimum age of 16 years old.
She hopes the prize pool of around $40,000 will draw in competitors from around the country.
“We’re hoping we will get quite a lot of numbers,” she said. “There will be different divisions – obviously Men’s A B and C Division depending on numbers and hopefully we get some pretty quality teams.”
The knockout has been organised by QuitBFit – Tackling Indigenous Smoking with the support of Manly Sea Eagles and NSW Touch Football in an effort to educate participants on the impact of smoking.
“The main reason why we’re hosting it is because our program is to tackle indigenous smoking, so if we bring a lot of indigenous people together it’s easier for us to get the message out there to better your health,” Lamb said.
“It’s national so to get lots of different communities involved and to bring everyone together.
“It is going to be a big weekend and obviously NSW and Australian Touch Football it will allow them to have a better look at Aboriginal players to obviously further the talent that we have within Aboriginal people.”
