For many years, Wellington Public School has operated a very successful transition program for students moving into kindergarten. Each year the program is evaluated and changes are made to benefit the incoming year’s intake of children.
The program operates over a number of weeks in Term 4, with the young people put into groups to experience what it will be like to be in a kinder classroom, meet the teachers and support staff and be guided around the school. Parents also have an initial meeting and induction, asking questions and receiving valuable information.
Incoming students have lovely teachers and each class is supported by a School Learning Support Officer, to help care for students and help facilitate an on-task work ethic.
Since 2012, Wellington Public School has been part of the Department’s Early Action for Success initiative where an Instructional Leader works with teachers to develop best practice in teaching - with a strong focus on literacy and numeracy.
This mentoring has been invaluable and continues to monitor progress of Infants children.

Wellington Public School’s seven-week Preschool to Kindergarten Transition Program for 2017-2018 will run each Wednesday, 9-11am, from October 18 (Term 4, Week 2) until November 29 (Term 4, Week 8).
This program is designed to: prepare children for starting primary school; place children in the structured learning environment of a Kindergarten classroom, allowing them to gain familiarity and feel comfortable in a new classroom; build on experiences gained at preschool, daycare or at home to ensure fundamental concepts are familiar before starting formal schooling; enable teachers to get to know the incoming Kindergarten children and be prepared to meet individual needs; allow children to become familiar with staff.
