The 100-year milestone was instead celebrated in 1921 with a special appearance from NSW Governor, Sir Walter Davidson, KCMG who attended the district on September 6 to unveil a new memorial.
The beautiful grey polished granite obelisk was commissioned by the centenary committee in memory of John Oxley, the Explorer of Wellington Valley. It was erected by C J Shakespeare, Monumental Sculptors.
The Binjang Monument, situated in front of Wellington Council Chambers corner Nanima Crescent and Warne Street, also featured a time capsule which was retrieved in 1961 when the new council chambers were opened.
The capsule containing a leather case with five coins and some copies of 1921 newspapers, had been placed beneath the foundation stone. The coins were removed and can be seen at the Oxley Museum.
