Burrendong Dam was proposed immediately after World War II to improve town water supplies and boost agricultural production in the Macquarie Valley. Construction of the dam began in 1946 but due to financial constraints was not completed until 1967.

Today, Burrendong Dam is one of the largest inland dams in NSW with a capacity of 1,678,000 megalitres, three times Sydney Harbour. The dam’s capacity includes 1,188,000 megalitres of water storage and a potential 489,000 megalitres of air space for flood mitigation.
The Macquarie Regional Library is commemorating this 50 year milestone of the dam opening with an exhibition that will display a number of photographs relating to the construction of Burrendong Dam. Guests will be able to enjoy presentations by a number of guest speakers, including representatives from Water NSW, talking about the operation, history and construction of Burrendong Dam, Wednesday 16 August 11am. John Oxley and The Wellington Valley
To commemorate the 200th anniversary of John Oxley’s exploration of the Macquarie River in 1817, Macquarie Regional Library is hosting a special talk presented by Curators from the State Library of NSW. Original maps and journals from John Oxley’s 1817 expedition and an original William Curtis drawing “Corroboree – Wellington 1847” will also be on display.
