LADIES’ GOLF
Last week 13 players braved the cold and eventual light drizzle to play the 18 hole Woodonia Cup v Par Event before a very welcoming luncheon of soup and toasted sandwiches around the fire. Cheryl Royal was the winner on -1, continuing her fine form from the previous weekend at Nyngan, where she returned home with a new golf stick and glove (but didn’t use this week because of the wet). She might produce it today.
Runner-up was Min Burge with -3. Nearest The Pins were taken out by Min and Ronda Payne. It was great to see Eve Kiss back playing after an extended break.
Today’s Event: Monthly Medal, 3rd Womens NSW Golf and Haines Fuller
Committee Meeting: This meeting will follow Lunch and today’s presentation.
VETERANS’ GOLF
17 players took to the course on a beautiful day after the crisp morning. Barry Bowman (Stuart Town) took home the “booty” with 46 points, with the “lawn bowler” Trevor Messenger runner up on 41 points. Putting was taken out by the other Stuart Town player “Duckie” Gillard. Each week a number of Yeoval players also participate with this great little group, under the watchful leadership of Bruce James.
DIGGERS’ GOLF
Sunday saw some 10 Diggers Golf Club members take to the Course on once again a beautiful day after the -3 start to the morning. Their next outing is scheduled for Sunday 6th August – 8.30am for 9am tee off.
SUNDAY JACKPOT GOLF
This new initiative by two supporters of the golf club and board sees any golfer (member, social or non) trying their hand at getting “one of 5 golf balls” into a “target hole” on Sundays anywhere from 10am to 4pm, commenced on Sunday with 13 people trying their luck.
Details: $15 (adults), $10 (juniors) will get you 9 holes of golf plus 5 balls and choice of 2 Sticks at the completion of your round to try for the jackpot. All rules are on display at the golf club and are also shown to you before you start. The jackpot commenced with a $200 valued voucher (donated by the two supporters) and for this coming Sunday July 30 the value is now $275.
JUNIOR RUGBY UNION
Junior rugby was back in full swing with all three grades at Montefiores on Saturday, the boys certainly did not disappoint their home crowd winning all three games on the day. The under 13s took on Mudgee Red who were no match for the revitalised Wellington squad who are now playing with a high level of confidence after enduring a very tough start to the season, full credit must go to the boys and their coaches for how they have improved this year.
The game itself was very entertaining and by the end of the first half the young Redbacks were up 12 nil after Liam Byrnes and Liam Hilet had both crossed. Noah Brien and Jack Owens added two more after the break and Hilat got his second. Mudgee jagged a couple to soften the blow but some outstanding defence by our man of the match fullback Allistair Harwick kept them in check for the rest of the game. Final score Wellington 33 Mudgee 10.
Our 15s lined up against Dubbo Red and once again Wellington were to powerful, our big forwards put the smaller Mudgee pack through the meat grinder and what was left after that was no match for the lively Redback backline giving us a 26 to 7 lead to start the second half.
Allan Riley led the way scoring four tries for the day not far behind him was big Eli Cox who got a double which is not a bad effort for a front rower, Ethan Styles also scored a gutsy try from close range leaving his team with a 40 to 19 victory. We had two wins up but our 17s faced the biggest test of the day running on against the 1st placed Dubbo Rhinos who had given us quite a touch up in the first round. This turned out to be an awesome game of football tough and hard with neither side giving an inch. Wellington scored first after a high kick allowed the speed machine Rhys Martens to open our account, the Rhinos then scored twice during the first half and with neither side converting the score was in their favour 10 to 5.
The Rhinos had plenty of opportunities to win but could not break through the Redbacks line. For the first time this year I’m am able to write that our attitude and commitment to the game was first class, this game will prove to be the turning point in our season and could well be the difference between making the finals or not. Final Score Wellington 12 Dubbo 10.
Next week 13s travel to Forbes. Under-15s play Friday night 7pm at Orange Emus. Under-17s at Narromine 12.30 start Walla carnival Sunday at Canowindra.
