Wellington couldn’t contain the Goats as they ran wild to secure a 43-7 win in Round 9 of the GrainCorp Cup Northern Division.
Redbacks showed their potential as they matched Geurie with heavy hits and strong play in the early stages of the game, however the Goats’ scrum dominated early to push their opponents’ forwards back with ease.
Geurie came up with the first points when captain Siua Sinisa steamrolled the Redbacks’ defence.
The points kept rolling in for Geurie through centre Moavuka Kavaefiafi who scored five minutes later.
Defence and plenty of drop ball set the scene for the next 20 minutes until a fiery encounter exploded ahead of half time with Goats going into the break up 12-nil.
Within minutes of the second half Siua scored his second try in similar fashion, taking three defenders with him over the line.
The Goats’ backs started to dance with great footwork and hard running from fullback Harry May who scored out wide with ease.
Geurie’s centre pairing of Nash Forgione and Moavuka dominated and smashed through their opposition in both defence and attack. Nash scored through the middle. Moavuka was next with his second of the day.
Geurie’s last try came from a wonderful backline move from flash finishing winger, Jordan Hurkett.
Zac McManus put the only points on the board for Wellington following a 40 metre break down the sideline. James Cusack got the conversion.
Geurie’s Matt Dowell said the Goats were too classy and outmuscled their smaller opponents in what was a bruising affair.
“Special mention to the Goats halves combination of Charlie and Hugh Edwards who between them controlled the entire game with ease,” he said.
Points for the Goats 3 and players player Charlie Edwards, 2 points Siua Sinisa, 1 point to Simon McGrath. Geurie 43.
The loss leaves Wellington second-last on the ladder.
Vice president Dave Sturman said a win against Coolah in Round 10 looks promising.
“Geurie are certainly a good team this year and we just couldn’t match them,” he said.
“We’re still hoping to win as many games as we can for the rest of the year, we’re pretty confident we can improve our record at the back end of the season.
“I’d like to give a pretty good wrap to all the guys who did turn up and play on the weekend, they can hold their heads high.
“They all put in a good effort and even though it didn’t go our way everyone can be proud of our efforts and how they played.”
