JUNIOR RUGBY
WELLINGTON REDBACKS
UNDER-13s
Our young Redback 13s found no comfort on the Dubbo turf when they lined up against a very committed Blues side on Saturday. Dubbo raced to a 35-nil lead at half-time and started strongly in the second half before our boys started to show some form, their efforts were soon rewarded with a good try from halfway scored by Liam Hilet Liam has played two games of rugby in his life and has scored two tries. Noah Brien charged over to put some respectability back in the score line before Dubbo surged again ending the day with a 50 to 17 win.
The news was no better for the under-15s who were unable to get into the rhythm of the game at any stage they were completely outplayed by the Dubbo side which was very disappointing as they have been very competitive all season. I’m sure they will learn from the loss and be a very different side next week. Final score – Dubbo 60 Wellington 0.
Luckily for me I was at Montefiores to watch the under-17s demolish the Dubbo Blues the attitude and discipline of the Redbacks was first class posting 19 unanswered points in the first half and continued along the road of destruction in the second. Our lanky winger Dale Smith was the star bagging three tries for the day, Bart Redfern, Nick Murray and Nathan Budd also scored one each before Dubbo were able to sneak over for their only points right on the full-time hooter which left the final score Wellington 36 Dubbo 5.
Our Wallas had a great day at Narromine competing in all three grades from all reports they are now ready and raring to go for their next carnival at Orange City this weekend.
Next week 13s v Mudgee at Montefiores 15s travel to Forbes and the 17s have a bye.
SOCCER
WELLINGTON WARRIORS: May 14
The two Warriors teams played their 5th round clashes of the DDSA last weekend. The Wellington Warriors girls had an 11am start playing at home against the Dubbo City Rangers.
The girls started strong pushing into the DCR half by passing and making good runs up either side of the DCR defencive line which exposed gaps for the midfield to try and exploit. While at the back, the defence of the Wellington team was solid as a brick wall and there was nothing getting passed them, no matter what the DCR girls tried, time and again it was failing in the face of the girls tremendous efforts. When the half time whistle blew it was 0-0 at the break.
The girls came out from the break and once again began solidly, with the Warriors creating chances on goal every few minutes but were continuously unsuccessful as DCR defended stoutly. In the second half, Vanessa Dover moved into the midfield, where she was able to create some solid chances in on goal, only to be stopped time and again by the DCR goal keeper, who has having a great game.
DCR were finally able to break Wellington's resistance and score in the final 2 minutes of the game making it a 0-1 win for them.
Even though the girls lost today, they can be truly proud of their efforts, with each game they are learning and improving which is pleasing to see. Today, it was great to see the girls creating opportunities to see and also to see them playing well in defence and holding DCR out for that long. That elusive first in is not far away.
Congratulations to Jade Lang who was decided man of the match for her excellent wing play and a big congratulations to all the girls, you should be very pleased with yourselves for such a fine performance.
The men also played at 11am, however, they were in Dubbo against the top of the table and undefeated Newtown, which featured a few former Wellington boys, in Sam and Tom Coon who we pull thoroughly love to have back (maybe next year we hope).
The first half was a dogged affair with both teams defenses playing solidly, which in turn meant that there was very few chances on goal for either team in the first stanza. The best chance of the half to score from open play fell to Newtown, however, it was swiftly extinguished by the inform goal Wellington goal keeper Sam Birbiles, who continues to go from strength to strength in between the sticks. Unfortunately for Wellington not long after this they gave away a soft penalty in the box which Newtown were then able to use to open the scoring. The sides went into the break with a 1 goal to nil score line which somewhat reflected the possession dominance that Newtown enjoyed in the half.
In the second half the Wellington boys came out with a renewed vigour and as a result of this they began to dominate play. The boys had the ball on the deck and began to stretch the Newtown defence and it was only a matter of time before a goal was to be scored. The goal came about 15 minutes in the half with Nick Streicher scoring a great goal to level the scores up. After this Wellington continued to press for a second goal, however, they were cruelly denied on two occasions with Pattrick Dandy twice hitting the cross bar.
After the second time the crossbar was hit the Newtown side started working themselves back into the game and again started to press the Wellington defence which continued to hold strong against anything that Newtown could throw at it. However, a scramble from a Newtown corner saw a Newtown player hit the deck and the referee again pointing to the spot for another soft penalty. Once again Newtown capitalised on their good fortune and led 2 - 1 with around 15 to go. The Wellington boys then threw everything they had at Newtown, with no luck and as the final whistle went the score remained 2 goals to 1 and Newtown continue their unbeaten start to the year.
The Wellington boys need to hold their heads high as they matched it with the competition favourite today and with some luck could have claimed the victory. For the Wellington men, the player of the match was Richard Fitzsimmons who was solid in defence all day.
There was a general bye whilst the WYL takes place in Dubbo last weekend.
Finally, congratulations to the other Wellington team, the Wildcats, who overcame their tradition rivals Dubbo Bulls to score a 3 goals to nil victory.
